Message From Superintendent Driggs

‚Äč

I have recommended to the board, and to our “1 to 1” transition committee, that we delay the handing out of computers to the students until next school year.  The date the computers are scheduled to be disbursed is August 4, 2016.  This is our 2nd day of school next year and we will hand them out to all 3rd through 12th graders that evening.  There are many reasons we have come to this decision and I have listed some below:

·         The salesman made a mistake when ordering the laptops and they sent us 650 of the wrong devices.  When starting to load the computers the tech department found that they had sent us ones with only 32 GB and they were supposed to have 64 GB.  They also only had 2GB of internal memory and they should have had 4 GB.  The correct ones just came in last Thursday and we are in the process of shipping the incorrect ones back.

·         Due to this delay, the four week period needed to load all 650 computers would put us into mid-March for the disbursement.  This is not ideal due to:

1.       Handing them out right in the middle of ISTEP testing will be a major distraction for students and staff.

2.       That is only one week before Spring Break

3.       There will only be a little over six weeks of school left.

·         One of the major reasons has to do with our “lease” dates.  Dr. Garland had planned to pay for the computers out of funds that would not allow us to re-coop the money by charging the students through book rental.  Therefore we are following the same path that many schools use and we are leasing the computers for 3 years.  The lease dates will concur with our disbursement of the computers and we do not want end date to be during 2nd semester of 2019.  We need the start and end dates to be during summer break.

I apologize for this change of plans but it will be what is best for our students and the financing of the laptops.  Mr. Copp and Mr. Buckley are planning on trying to have all of the computers loaded and ready by May so that the new computer loading task is completed before their summer technology needs come into play.  We also hope to have a couple of mobile laptop carts available for you to check-out for projects that you may have had planned for the students when we were going to be 1 to 1 this spring.

Please inform your students that they will not be receiving the laptops until the start of school next year.

Once again I apologize for this delay.
